A few upgrades

h1 Thursday, July 24th, 2008

You’ll notice in the right sidebar that I’ve made a few upgrades to Pop a la Mode. I’ve added two sections: Currently Reading and Currently Listening To. I’m reading much more lately and I want to be able to share my library with all of you. And my music is always a bit eclectic so I’m throwing that in also.

If you click on the title of something you’re interested in, you’ll be taken to either a site that sells it for more information or the web site of that person. Warning: if it’s music, it may have sound.

I’m not promising I’ll update it all the time but as I read something new or find a new artist, I will share.

Guilty summer pleasures

h1 Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Not those kind. Get your mind out of the gutter people.

Guilty Pleasure Number 1: NCIS reruns. What does it say about me that my favorite character is McGee, the computer geek?

Guilty Pleasure Number 2: Ace of Cakes on Food Network. I think I want to marry Duff. A man! Who bakes! Perfect.

Guilty Pleasure Number 3: iCarly on Nickelodeon. What am I? 11? I am very ashamed of this one.

Guilty Pleasure Number 4: Susan Elizabeth Phillips books. Tawdry romance - perfect summer fare. Which by the way my mother first recommended to me. Just sayin’ - she’s totally corrupting me.

Guilty Pleasure Number 5: Ice cream! I am attempting this year to at least eat the fat-free, sugar-free stuff so I don’t feel as fat as I could.

Anybody have any guilty pleasures they want to share?

On my bookshelf

It’s been awhile since I updated everyone on what I’m reading these days. Let’s just say diverse is probably a good way to put it:

Just finished - The Know-It-All: One Man’s Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World by AJ Jacobs; The Meaning of Tingo and Other Extraordinary Words from Around the World by Adam Jacot de Boinod; and 131 Christians Everyone Should Know.

Working on - Pick Me Up by Zoe Rice; Match Me If You Can by Susan Elizabeth Phillips; The United States of Arugula: The Sun-Dried, Cold-Pressed, Dark-Roasted, Extra Virgin Story of the American Food Revolution by David Kamp; Everything Bad is Good For You: How Today’s Popular Culture is Actually Making Us Smarter by Steven Johnson; and Nights of Rain and Stars by Maeve Binchy.

It is not unusual for me to have this many books going in case you’re wondering. It just depends on where I’m sitting in my house.

Like I said diversity - it’s the spice of life.

Summer in the city

h1 Sunday, July 8th, 2007

I really don’t know why I live in Alabama. We’ve had almost 100% humidity every day since Wednesday and the highs have been 96. I’m not cut out for this weather. I’m totally going to start job hunting in Alaska.

I kid.

Thankfully, next weekend I’m headed up to Michigan for a client event and that should be much cooler. I hope I don’t get too attached.

This weekend was very lazy and wonderful. I caught up on my Tivo and reading which happen to be two of my very favorite things. One great TV show that’s new is Burn Notice - you all must watch it! It’s about this spy that gets put on a black list and he’s stuck in Miami until he’s cleared. Think The Rockford Files crossed with The Equalizer and just a tad bit of MacGyver thrown in for fun. I promise - you’ll love it.

Books wise - I had a few that I have just gotten around to reading including but not limited to: Spies: The Secret Agents Who Changed the Course of History, Where There’s A Will There’s A Way: Or, All I Really Need to Know I Learned from Shakespeare and Lean Mean Thirteen.

I know - I have a wide and varied taste in literature. This is the knowledge I will win Jeopardy with one day.

Oh and neighbor Susan has a new boyfriend! They have seen each other every day for the past nine days since their first date. I’m excited for her but a little incredulous. Nine days? Nine dates? I have never ever met anyone I wanted to spend that much time with - thus the reason I’m still single.

Can’t judge a book by it’s cover

h1 Thursday, November 30th, 2006

I went to the bookstore during lunch today and browsed around. I did well, I only bought one book!

But as I was perusing the Southern writers section, I saw some of the funniest book titles I have ever seen. I wrote them down to check them out at the library because anything that makes me laugh that hard must be worth the time.

  • The Official Guide to Christmas in the South, or If You Can’t Fry It, Spraypaint It Gold
  • Being Dead is No Excuse: The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hosting the Perfect Funeral
  • My Heart May Be Broken, But My Hair Still Looks Great
  • I Gave You My Heart, but You Sold It Online
  • Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Like a Skank: And Other Words of Delicate Southern Wisdom
