Oooooooooooooo-klahoma!

h1 Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Oklahoma City is mighty pretty. Wait, that’s a song too. If you didn’t catch it, it’s “Route 66.” Ever since I got here I’ve been trying to think of all the songs with Oklahoma in it. Not counting the musical because that’s just a given.

This is what I’ve come up with so far:

1. Route 66
2. Okie from Muskogee
3. You’re the Reason God Made Oklahoma
4. I’ve Been Everywhere

Okay, so what am I missing? I know there has to be more that I just can’t remember.

I got a new attitude

h1 Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I colored my hair yesterday and got a fun new haircut. Let’s just say I went dark for fall. If we’re going to be specific - it’s chocolate #6.

I love it. It makes me feel like a different person. Which I needed a new attitude anyways so I’m working this in my favor. I am woman, hear me roar.

But this is funny. Last night, I was telling Dad I colored my hair and this is the coversation that followed:

Me: Dad, it’s great! It’s dark chocolate.

Dad: Lori, I don’t know why you have to change your hay-uh (hair). I liked it the way it was before - all natural.

Me: Dad, that wasn’t natural. You don’t even know what my real hair color is anymore.

Dad: Well it isn’t dark chocolate.

I’ll try and get a picture of it to put up but I’m a little busy today. I’m headed out tomorrow to Oklahoma City so I’m trying to get everything done. No promises, but I’ll try.

And hey, at least it’s just my hair color. I could have gotten a tattoo.

Office survival kit

h1 Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

I’ve been pretty busy lately. I feel like I’m constantly just trying to keep up with everything around me. This means I rarely take lunch and I’ve had to replenish my office survival kit.

I keep a stash of items in my desk drawer for just such days. Yeah, I’d rather leave the building but it’s just not happening. So what do I have?

1. Dried plums.
2. Cashew halves and pieces.
3. Beef jerkey.
4. Single-serve fruit punch drink mix.
5. Nekot crackers.

Diverse yet somewhat healthy. Today was beef jerky day. And lots of water.

A little bit of this, a little bit of that

I’m a people person

h1 Monday, September 17th, 2007

Actually I’m really not a people person. If you think I am, then you’ve seen me in my “work mode.” I’m paid to be personable. But I can flip that on and off like a switch. As comfortable as I might be in a large group of people, a day alone on my couch in my dark condo is just as fabulous to me.

My co-worker and I interviewed three people for an open position in our department this morning. They were all very nice and they all described themselves as a “people person.” What does that mean exactly? And why does that make you any more valuable to me as an employee?

The thing that got me was how confident they each were. Oozing it almost. Here they were, right out of college, ready to face the world and nothing was in their way. Except that whole hiring process but still, confident.

I wonder, and I throw this out for discussion, is there such a thing as too much confidence in an interview?

On the mend

h1 Friday, September 14th, 2007

So I think I’m going to live now. I’m starting to feel like an actual human being again. Grant it, a human being that is highly medicated but nonetheless, closer to fine.

Everyone has asked me what I did for three days as I laid on my couch. Well, I watched the entire first season of Bones. Fantastic show by the way. I think I have a new favorite. I watched two old Cary Grant movies (Arsenic and Old Lace and His Girl Friday). I wrote some remarks for Dad. I edited an ad for D. I started my Uncle Ronald on the process of building a web site for his church.

And in between all that I napped, I drank fruit punch and tried to answer a few e-mails. I thought I was supposed to be resting?
