I blank match game

h1 Friday, April 28th, 2006

I blame the Game Show Network. That whole channel is so darn addictive. I love the old Family Feud’s with kissy-face Richard Dawson; Press Your Luck’s whammys; Password; I’ve Got a Secret; and the best one of all, Match Game.

This week I’ve happened to catch a Match Game everynight before I go to bed. I love it - it’s just so cheese-tastic. The suits; the ties; the hair; the smoking on set and fantastic orange shag carpet.

The cast is even better - the best the era had to offer: Gene Rayburn (he’s so funny), Charles Nelson Reilly (gay as the day is long), Richard Dawson (too tanned for his own good), Brett Sommers (lung cancer waiting to happen) and occasionally Nipsey Russell, Fannie Flagg and whoever else they can dig up. I swear most of them were drunk during the tapings.

I would have been an awesome contestant. I always match the stars. But even if they brought the show back, it wouldn’t be the same. So I’ll just relive it on GSN and wish I were there.

God or the girl

h1 Tuesday, April 25th, 2006

I caught an interesting TV show on A&E this weekend: God or the Girl. I had read quite a bit about it in the media trades but had yet to catch it on TV. All I can say is “wow”.

The show dealt with four young men (20+) dealing with a call to priesthood in the Catholic church. It was really fascinating to see how each dealt with the call in their own way: one was feeling pressured by his mother because she wanted a priest in the family, one had a girlfriend, one had a thriving ministry of his own while the other left an $80,000 a year job to work in missions.

Honestly, in the end, their decisions had nothing to do with the girl. It had to do with them being able to live their lives freely - either in the world or in the church. It depends on your perspective of free.

One dude even said at one point: “I don’t know why being married and being a priest are mutually exclusive. How can one part of my life indicate my effectiveness as a priest?”

Good food for thought and if you happen to see it on the schedule anytime soon, check it out.

Only in Alabama

Today is Confederate Memorial Day. Can you believe it? All state offices are closed today but everything else is open.

It just cracks me up that they recognized this as a holiday. You could never get away with this in Virginia.

Neat trick

I learned this trick last night and thought I would pass it along.

If you ever lock your keys in the car and they have a remote on them, call your significant other. Or whoever has an extra set with the remote. Place your cell phone near the lock and have them hit the “unlock” button. Voila! Car unlocked.

Try it sometime.

Secret agent man

I have been an ALIAS junkie since it first came on the air. There’s something about the lying, espionage, cool wigs and cute guys. Mmmmm, Michael Vaughn.

They’re ending the series this May and even through all the ups and downs - I still love it. Sure some of the plotlines were silly and there was way too much Rambaldi for my taste but at the end of the day, it’s about a dad, a daughter and the coolest gadgets I’ve ever seen. Oh and saving the world.
